If driving from Bangkok, Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai, continue on highway 1 till you reach the town of Mae Chan. Turn right at the traffic lights onto road 1016 and continue for 40 kilometres until you reach the village of Ban Kutow. Take the right turn at the sign to Chiang Saen Lake. Drive one kilometre past the rice fields, sharp left then sharp right, up the hill through the village. Down the other side of the hill and as you see the lake on the right, you will see the entrance to Viang Yonok Hotel on your left.

The arial map here shows the position of Viang Yonok Hotel at the head of Chiang Saen Lake. The island in the centre of the lake is pristine and undisturbed. No motor boats of any kind are allowed on the water.

The outline of the ancient city walls and moat can be seen surrounding the old town of Chiang Saen. These walls and moat, although degraded by age remain on all three sides of the town with the Mekong river forming the fourth side and the border with Laos.

The wandering path of the Kam river can also been seen very clearly, flowing to the south of the town and into the Mekong.
