Local attractions

       

There are a great number of interesting places to visit, near Viang Yonok. We do tours in our comfortable 4 wheel drive or we can give you all the information if you wish to visit the places in your own vehicle. Tours can be modified as you wish.

We can also arrange minibus transport for larger groups.

On the ferry across the Maekhong to Laos.

VYF1; Hall of Opium, Golden Triangle, Boat ride, Chiang Saen          5 -6 hours

15 minute drive to Hall of Opium Museum (2 hours). Walk or bus down to the Golden triangle, sightseeing and souvenirs (1 hour). Long tail boat (30 minutes) downriver to Chiang Saen historic city, National Museum, Wat Chedi Liuang (58m high chedi built 1295) and Wat Pasak. 75 ruined temples inside the city walls and another 60 outside the walls. Return to the hotel by tuk-tuk. 1500 baht.


VYF2; Elephant Camp, Hot spring, Boat ride                                 6 hours

1 hour drive to Ruam Mitr elephant camp run by Karen people. 1 hour elephant safari (or as long as you like), walk to nearby hot springs and long tail boat ride down the Kok river to Chiang Rai, pick up and return to hotel. 2500 Baht day trip.

VYF3; King’s Mother’s Palace, Burmese border                                   7 hours         

1.5 hour drive up Doi Tung mountain, King’s mother’s palace & gardens (2 hours). Continue across mountains (30 minutes) to Arboretum for gardens (1 hour). Drive along mountain ridge Burmese border (1 hour), Mae Sai shopping, antiques & curiosities (1 hour).


VYF4; Long neck women, White temple, Waterfall                             7 hours

45 minute drive to Long neck village (1 hour), then on (45 mins) to Wat Rong Khun (1 hour), Khun Kon, at 87m, the highest waterfall in Chiang Rai (2 hours).

     

VYF5; Remote mountain, Drug Lords last camp                                   7 hours

2 hour (4 wheel drive) trip to Huay Mae Kham mountain, remote area to see real hill tribe villages, Lalichi waterfall and forest park, drive up the mountain, 1480 metres.

Option to walk to top of the mountain and Burma border (2 hours return). On return trip, visit famous 1970s & 1980s opium warlord’s military camp and base.

 

VYH6; Bird-watching                                                                                  2 hours

Guided tour with Mick Davies, one of Thailand’s most knowledgeable birders, to see rare species and harrier roosts in the Yonok wetlands.


VYH7; Silk farm                                                                                           1 hour

20 minute drive to village of silk makers, see raising the silk worms and buy cheapest silk in Thailand direct from the women who make it.

4 wheel drive trips to Laos
