6.8 Earthquake hits Chiang Saen!

Written by Ian Smith on 26 March 2011.

21:00 24th March 2011; An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the richter scale hit Chiang Saen. The epicentre of the quake was approximately 50 klm north of Chiang Saen in Burma.
Unfortunately, this has caused the top of the chedi at Wat Jeddhi Luang, in Chiang Saen town, to fall down. Our friend Jeena at the Heaven on Earth coffee shop at the temple told me that this part of the chedi was last restored 38 years ago. Wat Jomkitthi suffered a similar distaser.
There was no damage at Viang Yonok fortunately. Vassana & I were sitting in the reception when the quake struck. There was a deep rumbling noise and the building was shaking violently from side to side for about 20 seconds. This has since been followed by aftershocks of lesser intensity.
